TsPA March 2015 General Agenda: "Culture of Violence in the Society: Violence Against Women, Minorities, Differences Rise on Which Basis?"

In the first days of March 2015, the traditional agenda of the TsPA continued to be primarily “violence against women,” just like it has been in the previous years 2011, 2013 and 2014.

Our situation right before the 8th of March is evident regarding the number of women killed, exposed to rape and violence; when we look at reports launched both monthly and annually. The murder of Özgecan Aslan on 11 February triggered a debate as well. At the forefront of the debates, there was always “violence against women by men.”

However, more careful eyes would see parts hidden under the iceberg. Killed just because of throwing a snowball, journalist Nuh Köklü; injuries of deputies during Internal Security Law debates at the Parliament; rapes at Şakran Prison, LGBTI individuals… Women, minorities, differences…

As the respondents of violence increase, the quality, quantity and the power of sanction of penalties against perpetrators are also on debate.

Events we always try to minimize and trivialize by calling them “third page news” are big realities of our lives. When we step back and ask on which basis does the violence rise, the general agenda is obvious.
